2011: The Year of the Good Food Producer

In 2011 we visited more than 40 good food producers and providers in 30 cities across four states and British Columbia. We petted cows and goats in dairy barns, waded ankle deep in shellfish beds and waist deep in grain fields, trotted down rows of vegetables and fruit, and walked numerous orchards, large and small. We had to brush the flour out of our hair each time we left a grain mill. Here are some of the wonderful folks we met along the way.

The University of Wisconsin meat scientists have launched a new “Meat Science and Safety Training Program” to turn out “Master Meat Crafters.” We thought we’d find out how an “old world German Master Butcher” learn his craft. We asked Uli Lengenberg of Uli’s Famous Sausage about his training in Germany.

Cooking the Whole Hog...er...Head

Tom Winterrowd, who farms near Canby, Oregon, said that the minute he saw the announcement for the hog head cooking class he knew he’d be in it. Portland Meat Collective recently offered the class, bringing in Ben Meyer, the chef at Grain and Gristle Restaurant as the instructor.

Is our meat infectious?

Our food system is definitely bottoms up! Animal agriculture consumes 80% of all antibiotics used in the US and yet our meat is covered with infectious bacteria. Multiple studies across the US and Canada show that our meat is contaminated with a variety of infections bacteria, some of which is resistant to multiple antibiotic types.

Rising food prices push 44 million into extreme poverty

Rising global food prices has pushed an estimated 44 million more people into extreme poverty in developing countries over the past eight months, the World Bank reports. The poverty-fighting institution said its food price index increased by 15 per cent between October, 2010, and January, 2011, and is just 3 per cent below its 2008 peak during the last food price crisis.

FAO Food Price Index Highest Since 1990

Serving both developed and developing countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. The FAO has tracked food prices since 1990. As prices continue to rise on most of the indexes, we are approaching or exceeding the food prices that triggered riots in 2008.
