Can Montana feed itself? That sounds like a pretty basic question – after all, Montana is the fourth largest state in the United States, spanning 147,000 square miles. Shouldn’t we be able to support our meager population of 1,050,000 souls? We are primarily an agricultural state where almost 28,000 farms and ranches are spread across 60 million acres.

The Resilient Ranch

Montana is rightfully called Big Sky Country, and it’s not unusual to drive 3 or 4 hours to attend a meeting, visit friends, or join a field day to learn about ranching or farming. On a hot and smoky day in August, Anderson Ranch in the Tom Miner Basin, near Yellowstone National Park, hosted several dozen folks who came to learn more about resilient ranching.

Neither rain nor snow or sheets of ice will stay Organicology 2017!

Organicology – a “portmanteau word” meaning the study of organics – is the biggest conference/trade show focused entirely on organic seeds and produce in the country. This year more than 800 people attended the three-day conference.

T-40: Forty Years of Tilth

At this year’s Tilth Producers of Washington conference, now referred to as T-40, a few attendees of the first conference – older, wiser, and grayer – mingled with younger farmers (some not yet born when Berry spoke in 1974 at “T-1”) to share ideas, advice, and plans for the future.

MOA Annual Conference 2013: Good Soil, Good Crops, Good Food

Every December for the last decade, regardless of the weather, the Montana Organic Association (MOA) has held its annual conference. This year, from December 12-14, about 100 hardy souls gathered in Kalispell Montana to learn more about organic production, seed saving, and GMOs. Some of the participants traveled for hours through blowing, drifting snow and temperatures as low as -35°.

Focus on Farming: Back to Our Roots

The 10th Annual Focus on Farming event brought together 600+ food and farming advocates and practitioners for a daylong immersion in six areas of focus on farming. Especially inspiring and motivating was Will Allen, CEO of Growing Power, not only gave a rousing keynote presentation, he led four hour-long workshops.

The Future of Farming and Food, A Whole Foods Speaker Series Event

Getting good food from the field to the fork is not a solitary occupation, it takes a team: farmers, food processors, researchers, and retailers. And discussions like the Seeds of Innovation: The Future of Farming and Food should take place more often and in more communities. It’s a must for a good food world.

Past But Not Over - Nourishing the Future: Tilth Producers of WA Annual Conference

Alternating between the eastern side of the Cascades and the west, Tilth Producers of Washington held its 2013 Annual Conference in Yakima. Every year, the conference is preceded by a Washington State University symposium, and the two events are attended by hundreds of Washington farmers, ranchers, food processors, and “friends.”
